I felt that this image clearly depicted the importance of using architecture frameworks for strategic planning as a way to support businesses in executing those plans and putting processes into place to achieve desired outcomes.
After documenting the current state of the different business units within my organization, I quickly realized the value of the whole process (though it was tedious). After having a complete and detailed view of the current state of the organization, it made it much easier to identify the future desired state of each business unit. I found researching the desired state much more interesting because it allowed me to think about the true potential of the school. In an ideal business and financial situation, in what areas would the school like to grow? And then, how can we make that a reality? It's important to ask questions like what steps does the school need to take, what expenses can we eliminate, what can we modify, and what can we transform, to make the school the best it can be. Schools are different than the "businesses" that we've been studying, because the ultimate goal and outcome is educating students.
Understanding the true current state of an organization and setting clear and specific goals with desired outcomes makes strategic planning much easier and more realistic. After going through this strategic process, now it seems very pointless to set lofty goals without clearly mapping out the current state and identifying issues and gaps within the systems in place in order to best plan for the future.
